Empire Test Pilots' School
Empire Test Pilots’ School (ETPS) based at the MOD Boscombe Down site provides MOD and overseas governments with tri-service pilots and engineers for acceptance testing, aerodynamics and systems research flying duties.
ETPS is the cornerstone of the UK MOD's flight test training. As well as training home-grown military test pilots, the School, in support of worldwide military diplomacy, is renowned for providing graduates for many other countries and the wider international defence sector. Operating under MOD's regulatory and supervisory flying framework, the School is operated by QinetiQ on behalf of MOD as part of the LTPA.
The ETPS Graduate courses for rotary and fixed wing are in compliance with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulations. The courses are split into two halves:
- The first six-month course qualifies TP and FTE graduates to EASA CAT 2 standards, which is a military Class B course
- A further six months completes training to EASA CAT 1 standards, which is a military Class A course
For more information on the breakdown of these courses, the platforms used in training, and the instructors at the school, please visit the ETPS website.
