Environmental Platform Testing

Army vehicle undergoing cold environmental test

Our environmental platform testing capability is able to accommodate aircraft, large vehicles and other test pieces and systems requiring qualification and testing. With the ability to conduct habitability trials, it also offers a wide range of acclimatisation and training opportunities to customers.

Tests are conducted in three main types of facility.

Temperature/humidity chambers
We have two environmental testing chambers, which can test systems with the engines running. One chamber is the largest in Europe and can accommodate huge systems such as aircraft, battle tanks and complete ground stations. It has the unique ability to allow aircraft start-and-run testing and dynamic operation of vehicles while under condition.

The sheer size of our chambers enables multiple pieces to be tested simultaneously. We can test complete ground stations across the full range of conditions: at temperatures from -70°C to +70°C, and humidity from 10% to 95% RH (true solar).

Our chambers enable the climatic conditioning of troops as well as equipment.

Blower tunnel
We run the UK’s only external wind generator, which is used in aircraft cross-wind start trials and for testing the reliability of telecommunications in high winds.

Rolling platform
Our rolling platform simulates the motion at the rear end of a naval vessel in sea states from 1 to 6. It can be used to test any equipment likely to be on a ship, including helicopters.
